We are now, I am over-excited to learn, on the Mk7 version of the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Obviously I won't be giving my half-baked opinion on whether it's any good or not, but it does at least mean that this is a good time to look back over the previous incarnations while perhaps not dwelling for too long on how perfect the Mk2 was. So yes, the Mk1 and Mk2 Golf GTIs are dead-cert classics that are steadily climbing in price, which means it's getting hard to find anything decent for less than ￡3000. The Mk3 we can forget about, even though the VR6 was an averagely well presented V6 treat. No, you can only get serious about used Golf GTIs from the Mk4 onwards.
