Porsche and Volkswagen are embroiled in a takeover dispute that could rattle on for years. It has been described as a recipe for disaster and an alliance that could create one of the world's most effective car companies. But no one knows quite how Porsche's drawn-out David-conquers-Goliath takeover of Volkswagen will end up. At the centre of it all, as ever, is Volkswagen Group chairman Ferdinand Piech - the brains behind landmark cars such as the Porsche 917, Audi Quattro and fourth-generation VW Golf. Pitched against him is the company his extended family controls, Porsche, and its straight-talking chairman, Wendelin Wiedeking. Adding further volatility to the mix is each side's labourunion, neither of which is prepared to budge when it comes to protecting workers' rights.
