Thought speed cameras were the new traffic cops? Steve Sutcliffe did too, until he spent an evening with two of the Met's finest. Photographer Stan Papior and I climb into the back seat of the extraordinarily well tooled-up BMW 530d police car. No more than 10 seconds later, the in-car radio declares that there's an armed robbery in progress in Ealing. The radio voice asks casually if there are any officers in the local area who can attend, at which point Stan and I look at each other and wonder. The car we are sitting in is at Alperton police station, just round the corner from Ealing, but I'm not sure I'm ready to don the bulletproof vest just yet, thanks. We haven't even had a cup of tea. Our drivers for the day are PC David Pendleton and PC Simon Mawer, both of whom are class one advanced officers who have been working for the Met's Traffic Division for more than 20 years combined. They are entirely unfazed by the radio call, however, because this is what they do, all day, every day: sorting out the carnage that is the Greater London road network.
