JUST WHAT EXACTLY is a bionic cheetah? We're not really sure, but if you plug those two words into Google, up pops a plethora of references to the Infiniti FX. It seems the aggressive styling and sporting behaviour of the Japanese SUV caused the American media to latch on to such a nickname. The first-generation FX was launched in the US in early 2003. It borrowed the platform and 280bhp V6 from its parent company's sports car, the Nissan 350Z. A320bhp V8 was also available. The FX's looks were refreshingly original, but interior space was comically small and dentists replacing tooth fillings of rattled FX owners were the only people to praise the ride quality. Even so, the strong performance and look-at-me styling clicked with US buyers.
