Volkswagen has gone for gentle evolution with its Mk6 Golf. Has it done enough to create a new class benchmark for quality? Hilton Holloway delivers the first verdict. For the unveiling of the new, Mk6 Golf, Volkswagen has decided to station itself in a huge custom-built pavilion nearly 1000ft up a mountainside, 30 minutes' drive from Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, accessible only by a dramatic new road that was originally built for accessing a mountain-top quarry. If that sounds outlandish and dramatic, it is. But Iceland is still a curious place for a car launch; even if you accept that the torrential rain that's falling during our visit is but a blip in a summer of clear blue skies (unlikely), the majority of the country's roads are widely regarded as some of the worst in the northern hemisphere and are inconsistently surfaced with some of the noisiest asphalt yet conceived.
