AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF PERFORMANCE OF INDIAN SILK GOODS IN GLOBAL MARKET

The primary objective of the study was to undertake temporal analysis of composition, pattern and growth in performance of India's silk goods exports using a few indices. The disaggregated data obtained under the chapters of 50 (silk) and 62 (articles of apparel, accessories, not knit or crochet) of HS1992 for the,period between 1992 and 2005 were used in the study. The Indian silk goods exports registered significant growth in the period between 1992 and 2005, despite stagnant growth in the international trade in silk goods. The export competitiveness analysis showed that silk cocoons and raw silk (thrown) had an improved export performance, whereas, bow ties and cravats of silk/silk waste had shown decline in the performance. Though India is an export dominant country having trade surplus in silk goods, the import dependency was seen in raw materials namely, raw silk (not thrown), silk waste and silk yarn (other than yarn spun from silk waste).
