In the reeling process, proper disposal of the leftover pupae remain a subject of concern for the entrepreneur. Sometimes, if the wet pupae are not disposed in the same day from the reeling unit the reeler is subjected to the wrath of the neighborhood as the heap of the pupae dumped in reeling unit produces loathsome stink around due to decaying. Due to lack of proper disposal techniques, the issue remains to be weary for the entrepreneur. Caught unaware of the additional revenue and owing to cumbersome process in drying and storage of the pupae, the disposal goes awry. With the perspective of doing away with the problems associated with conventional pupae drying (open air sun drying), a proto type of Silkworm Pupae Solar Dehydrator (SPSD) was designed, fabricated and tested successfully. The loaded SPSD cabinet temperature, moisture and pupae drying rate were examined in both fair and murky climatic conditions. The cost-benefit analysis suggests that the revenue through SPSD dried pupae is about 11 times that of the conventional open-air sun-drying method. Moreover, the payback period on the investment to manufacture the SPSD is around 7 months. Because of simple design and bountiful advantages associated with SPSD, the proposed commercial application seems to be viable for silk reeling sector.
