Correlation between different characters of the silkworm, Bombyx mori L.

A study was conducted to determine the correlation between different characters of silkworm Bombyx mori using 22 multivoltine silkworm breeds. Boil off loss ratio ranged from 23.81 (PV1) to 30.65% (ND10), while cocoon weight ranged from 1.060 to 1.407 g, cocoon shell weight from 0.145 to 0.252 g and filament length from 408 to 698 m in PM and NDV6, respectively. Cocoon shell percentage ranged from 13.71 (PM) to 18.90 (2000H) and the filament size ranged from 1.97 (PM) to 2.73 d (P2D1). Highly significant correlation was observed between cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell weight and cocoon shell percentage, cocoon shell weight and filament length, and cocoon shell percentage and filament length. Among multivoltine silkworm breeds, some such as PV1, BL61, NDV6 and 96A with low boil off loss ratio may be utilized as breeding resource materials in future breeding programmes for the development of superior silkworm breeds with quality silk.
