Returning as a columnist for 'Practical Viticulture' this issue is Alison Phillips, viticultural technical officer for the Houghton Wine Company in Western Australia, who draws on her practical experience to provide some general guidance for growers with regards to irrigation—why we do it, how to determine when our vineyards need it and the outcomes it may influence in the legd up to vintage, particularly in cooler climates. Based in Margaret River, Alison looks after the company's growers across the State as well as the company's two vineyards in Brookland Valley and Maschmedt, Alison completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Viticulture) degree at Adelaide University. Her first job was as technical officer—grower liaisonursery for S, Smith and Son (Yalumba) in the Barossa Valley. After two years she moved to Yalumba's Barossa Vineyards, incorporating the Heggies and Pewsey Vale vineyards, also as technical officer. She joined the Houghton Wine Company in 2001.
