A comparative study of water transmission functions in a saline and non-saline soil

To study the effect of soil salinization on water transmission characteristics, a laboratory study was conducted on a highly saline (calcareous, Vertic Ustochrept) and non-saline (calcareous, Vertic Ustochrept) soil. Soil water diffusivity was found to be higher in non-saline than in the saline soil. Hydraulic conductivity and weighted mean diffusivity in the two soils were of similar order. Penetrability and sorptivity also followed similar trends in the two soils. The solid-liquid contact angle and moisture retention were higher in saline soil than that in the non-saline soil. An exponential function of the type D (#theta#) = D_0e~(#beta##theta#) was found good for describing the soil water diffusivity D (#theta#) and moisture content relationship in both the soil types.
