Basmati rice occupies a premier status both in the rice production and consumption sectors. Scientists gave to the farmers a new variety 'Pusa 1121' which had all the characteristics of Basmati rice plus the aroma (wanted in the earlier released 'PusaBasmati 1'). 'Pusa 1121' captured a substantial area both in Punjab and Haryana during the present century. Scientists have recently developed some other Basmati cultivars like 'Pusa 1401' and 'Pusa 1460'. This evolution of new successful varieties of Basmati by scientists foresees a Basmati rice revolution in the country.
