Bracken colonises quickly and while it's not as dominant in the region as some other areas the plant's spread does have implications n those in the uplands and moorlandsXPERTS BELIEVE bracken has the ability to expand its area by up to three per cent a year. This comes at the expense of other plants and wildlife, causing major problems for land managers and those with livestock.After the EU banned the use of the long-standing herbicide, Asulam, farmers in the West Midlands and those further afield have had to look at other ways to tackle this evolutionary successful fern.Now with bracken fronds starting to die off, usually in mid-September, it is a good time to take action to get at the roots which remain healthy.The question is how to get the best results when tackling bracken?Asulam has been off the table for some time now and farmers are getting used to looking at other control methods.
