India is deficient in the production of both N and P2O5, compared to consumption. As a result of increase in consumption and decline in domestic production, there was a large deficit of N and P2O5 in 2007-08 which was met through imports. The deficit in N was 3.731 million tonnes in 2007-08 which was significantly higher than the deficiency level in the previous year at 2.249 million tonnes (Table 19). The higher deficit in 2007-08 was due to the sharp increase in consumption and also decline in domestic production over the previous year. The decline in the production of N was 622 thousand tonnes, while consumption increased by 859 thousand tonnes during 2007-08 over the previous year. In the case of P2O5, the deficit almost doubled from 1.103 million tonnes during 2006-07 to 2.011 million tonnes during 2007-08. This was once again due to increase in consumption by 183 thousand tonnes and decline in production by 726 thousand tonnes during 2007-08 over 2006-07.
