This article discusses temperature instrument and control valve problems. It is hope that the readers would see that thorough knowledge on the working principles of instruments is essential to troubleshoot and solve instrument problems. In addition troubleshooters must develop multilateral thinking to overcome problems by developing alternatives to minimize or even avoid scarce resource use as in the example. Alternative avoids using non-available multicore and even enough of single core compensating leads. Ability to develop such ideas comes from lateral thinking and avoiding tunnel vision. The case studies of this article illustrate these points.
