Environment Management at Birla Copper's Fertiliser Plants

Hindalco's copper division, with its integrated facility at Dahej in the Bharuch district of Gujarat, enjoys a leadership position in India. The unit has the unique distinction of being one of the largest copper smelter in the world at a single location with a 500,000 tpa capacity based on multiple world class technologies. The facilities include copper smelters, captive power plants, utilities and a captive jetty. The company's copper product range-includes copper cathodes and continuous cast copper rods. In addition to copper products, Birla Copper also produces precious metals, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and other phosphatic fertilisers.The unit operates on the principle of sustainable development and commitment for preservation and protection of clean and green environment. The paper briefly describes the process for fertiliser plant as well as environmental control measures taken at Dahej plant.
