Autumn is fast approaching and as farmers start to plan their winter drilling programme it's time to think about those winter habitats that are all so important to Britain's wildlife. Even though recent winters have not been nearly as cold as in yearsgone by, plants and animals still have to be able to adapt to low temperatures and a shortage of food. The cold causes living things all sorts of problems. Freezing temperatures turn water into ice so that animals can't drink and plants can't take up water through their roots to enable them to make food.
