Chris Jones, managing director of Micro-Epsilon UK, explains how recent developments in laser triangulation technology is enabling sensors to offer a better solution than vision systems in metrology measuring applications. Laser triangulation sensors for measuring the linear distance of a target from the sensor have been available for over ten years. Linear distance can be referred to as movement, position, displacement or distance. The technique has developed as the integration of digital electronics and high powered digital signal processors DSP's enable the laser to be less sensitive to target colour or texture and the surrounding environment, ambient light, and temperature changes.
