A massive rotary table for tool carriers has been developed to reduce handling times for car body welding. Powerful control and precise positioning of the system has been achieved through the use of servo drives. Based on a massive rotary table for tool carriers, the Turnflex system from Kuka is already helping to reduce handling times for the welding of car bodies. The system consists of an in-feed, a 9m diameter carousel and a welding station with a number of welding robots. Kuka needed to find a way to control the large masses involved - the rotary table weighs 12 tonnes without tooling and the maximum inertia is above 100,000kg/m{sup}2. The Lenze 9400 servo drives was chosen to achieve control and positioning for the system.
