Hlsmelt plant ramps up/Ramp up signals a new era of cleaner, more efficient iron production

Rio Tinto's new commercial-scale HIsmelt plant has begun continuous production of molten iron from its smelt reduction vessel at Kwinana in Western Australia. Construction of the plant, which took two years and cost more than 400m dollars, was completed in April and has been progressively commissioned since then. Rio Tinto has spent more than 600m dollars over the last 20 years in developing this technology. The plant will now move into a ramp-up phase and is expected to reach its full production rate of 800,000tpa over the next three years.
