Headlamps are the eyes of a car and make a substantial contribution to its appearance and image. Light guide technology in particular enables the design of contours and illuminated signatures that are easily detectable, thus providing brand recognition. One example can be seen in the new BMW 3 series coupe headlamp, a joint development of BMW and Automotive Lighting. New materials and their properties, such as spectral transmission, transition temperature and melt-flow rate, are becoming as important as simulation software in predicting the appearance of a vehicle. Besides improvements in speed, stability and ecology, a car's design is one of the most important elements in its success. The endeavour towards achieving an unmistakable appearance for a car is today concentrated not only on the design lines and the contour of the car's body. The headlamps and rear lamps are also making an increasingly large contribution towards producing a unique day and night appearance.
