Harvest pressure on prices

THROUGHOUT the month of Janu-ary it is expected that grain prices in southern Australia will weaken. North of Forbes, NSW, there should be some improvement in grain prices but the moves can be expected more towards the end of the month rather than atthe beginning. Most of the grain this harvest is in the southern and western areas so this is where the greatest downward pressure on prices will be. Take Western Australia for example where a record wheat harvest is coming to a close. With a very smalldomestic market for grains, because of the small population, all growers put their wheat into the AWB pool even through it might have first been bought by another trader. The only wheat and barley that growers put into farm storage was grain that had some faults. There was just no point in putting sound wheat or barley into farm storage waiting for a rise in the WA domestic market.
