Growers in most areas of southern Australia cannot remember when their crops looked so good. The foundations of the incoming wheat crop of around 24 to 24.5 million tonnes were laid during the winter. In Western Australia and South Australia growerswere able to seed each of their winter crop commodities at, or close to the optimum sowing dates for each district. And from sowing through to late September crop growth was not checked by lack of soil moisture. Thus crops are thick with plenty of shootsper plant and the heads on each shoot are long. This means the crops have very high yield potential.
