The city media distorted trends by focusing on some anomalous glitches that provided good copy, giving the impression large areas of farming country were being bought up by overseas millionaires. Tremendous publicity following the success of the first two parts of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings encouraged people to look closer at the more secure Down Under scenery, encouraged by recent terrorist events in the Northern Hemisphere.
