摘要

FROM environmental activist to mediator of consensus, Dr. Patrick Moore has been involved in setting the international environmental and sustainability agenda since the 1960's. In an engaging address to the mining and minerals industries in June, he spoke of Australia's role in the world nuclear industry and the benefits of nuclear power. Demand for uranium will continue to go up around the world and Australia is in a position to profit from that, said Dr. Moore. Fossil fuels, especially coal - Australia's largest export - are far more polluting than nearly all alternatives and the world is in need of vast amounts of clean energy. Opposed to nuclear energy in the 60's, 70's and 80's as a Greenpeace campaigner, Dr. Moore has changed his view over time as technology, attitudes and climate have changed. He describes this transition that began in the late 1980's. "For me it was time to make a change. I had been against at least three or four things every day of my life for 15 years; I decided I'd like to be in favour of something for a change."
