Application of household compost to fallow ground from a waste system called Bedminster has been a mixed blessing for cane farmers at Cairns. One grower reported great results but another found his property riddled with weeds. The Bedminster system involves composting of garbage and biosolids to recover the organic component and return it to the soil. After non-biodegradable items are separated from the waste, the remainder is fed into the first compartment of a three-compartment rotary digester andbiosolids added to create microbial activity to accelerate the process.
