The Australian sugarcane industry is relatively free from pests and diseases compared to many other countries, according to SRDC. Although we have historically suffered large losses from outbreaks of canegrubs, Fiji leaf gall and more recently orangerust, we do not have the stalk borers that devastate cane crops in many other cane growing countries. Additionally, we do not have crippling diseases such as smut and Ramu stunt - although smut is now established in the Ord River district of Western Australia.
