Mandarin exports threatened by hefty Indonesia tariff rise

Queensland's mandarin growers fear the worst after their second largest export market, Indonesia, thrust a five-fold tariff increase on imports. The tariff rose from 5% to 25% in January and is expected to remain at that level until 2008, decline to 20% in 2009 and then 10% in 2010. It is the second major headache the Queensland citrus industry has faced in the past 12 months after the recent Canker outbreaks at Emerald. Queensland produces about 85% of the 6000 tonnes of mandarins annually exportedto Indonesia.
