Knowing how much water is in the soil profile is a key to good crop and soil management. Understanding how differences in soil type and rainfall patterns affect water and nitrogen accumulation in fallows is essential to good management of a cropping program. A dry start to a season obviously has crops behind at the beginning, but it is worth knowing how far behind (or in some cases ahead) this might be.
