Details for long-life structures that can clearly demonstrate low maintenance requirements are now being specified. Costing on a 'life cycle' basis is used to ensure that the real life costs of bridges, highways, freeways, tunnels, other infrastructure and forms of the built environment are included in economic analyses rather than solely on the cost to complete. Design life durability specifications of 100 years are now not uncommon.
