Records from the Bonsai Bench: Botanical Name - Pyrus calleryana Common Name - Callery Pear

First described in published literature by French botanist Joseph Decaisne in 1858. Pyrus calleryana is a medium sized deciduous flowering tree up to 60 feet in height with a rather rounded shape in maturity. Leaves are oval with a serrated edge and range from 1.5 to 3 inches in length. Flowers are formed on branch spurs from the previous season's growth. Pyrus calleryana is one of the earliest trees to flower in the spring. Flowers are followed by small pea sized fruit. Fall coloration is excellentand is in the orange to red shades.
