Growing up on Oahu, I was very aware of the towering cliffs on the windward side and the stunning shoreline of the offshore islands. The trees on the islands have a full' range of shapes depending upon where they grew, the amount of wind, and rain they received but mostly depending on their exposure to storm waves. The same trees that grow tall and thick on high ground will crawl with intertwining trunks along the rocky shoreline as they hang on for dear life with roots anchored to the rough lava; living with no visible soil!
