Notes from Japan: The Fujikawa International School of Bonsai

The information and subjects presented thus far in the "Notes From Japan" article series are a direct conveyance of the concepts and practices that both I and Owen Reich have been exposed to during our time spent as apprentices at Kouka-en nursery under Master Keiichi Fujikawa. It is our hope that this information has proven (and will continue to prove) beneficial to the readers of ABS and applicable to their personal bonsai collections. Our experiences thus far working as apprentices at Kouka-en nursery in Osaka, Japan have provided us with a new perspective on bonsai art and a better understanding for how to assist in improving bonsai in the United States and abroad into the future. Owen and I have begun this process by presenting valuable and applicable information to enthusiasts, hobbyists, and artists through a variety of outlets—one, of course, being the ABS Journal. In addition, we will bring hands-on learning opportunities to local clubs, societies, and individual students, presenting theinformation we have learned at Kouka-en in a complete, unreserved manner.
