THE HERON'S PLIGHT: A Restyling of a Juniperus chinensis var. Taiwanensis

This example used in our restyling, a valued Taiwan Juniper, arrivedin Italy some years ago. It was among a group of imports to be used byfamous bonsai masters during some of the more important nationaland international bonsai events. The restyling began in the winter of 2004 when the Juniper hadestablished an acceptable maturity (Photo 1) with very defined, thickbranches and a good general structure. I decided to change its design togive the tree a new style consistent with the tastes of its new owner. First I studied the trunk. It had a most precious mizusui in Ia spiral formation (Photos 2 & 3), already very well established and anearly tubular structure, demonstrating the years and years of carefultreatment to ensure a perfect cicatrisation.
