My first encounter with the subject tree was in 1990, a very short time after becoming involved in the art of bonsai. It was the biggest and oldest bonsai tree I had seen, and I fell in love without hesitation. The pot was four feet long and a foot deep. The trunk was the diameter of a large pizza, and the tree stood five feet tall. It takes four men to carry it. If you are a bonsai tree, you can be quite large and still be a miniature. I only vaguely understood the significance of the tree, but there was much for everyone to learn about it—even the ones charged with its care at the time.
