Although azalea bonsai are attractive in all seasons, they are most stunning when in bloom (Figure 1 above). Prolonging the time of best "in bloom" appearance is a goal of all satsuki bonsai lovers. Bloom time for Satsukis is late May and early June in much of the US. Weather conditions at this time of year can rapidly diminish the appearance of a satsuki bonsai. High temperature, hot sun, strong winds, and rain are serious factors in premature deterioration of satsuki blooms. Fortunately, there areseveral steps that one can take to protect and prolong the best appearance of satsukis. The very best action is to move the bonsai to a protected location as soon as the first blooms open. A brightly lit (but no direct sun), 70-75 degree, out of the windindoor space is ideal. In such conditions, satsuki bonsai blooms can be enjoyed for nearly a month. While blooming, very little vegetative growth takes place. This reduces the need for energy from sunlight. Fertilizer is not recommended during the blooming period.
