Kolon changes tack on jobs

Kolon Industries is changing tack on its restructuring programme by seeking to trim about a third of its workforce of around 3000,a company source told ACN.He said Kolon planned to make around 750 blue-collar and 250 white-collar workers redundant.The source said the company had been forced to abandon its original plan of not laying off any workers when it closed unprofitable plants.Kolon had planned to transfer workers from closed plants to expanded or new facilities(ACN 27 October 2003).He explained that the decision to cut about 30% of the company's workforce had been brought about by high raw-material costs - 'the costs of PTA [purified terephthalic acid],ethylene glycol,and caprolactam have doubled since the end of 2002' - and the labour problems that plagued Kolon last year.
