WITH THE peak Christmas production season approaching in China, shipowners are pushing for higher container freight rates. But they may not find the going easy. The Far Eastern Freight Conference (FEFC) has proposed a USUS250/teu (twenty-foot equivalent unit) hike from 1 July 2005 between Asia (excluding Japan) and northern Europe and the Mediterranean in view of higher cost of operations. It had proposed a similar hike in April, but, according to one industry source, the rate-restoration move was not fully successful.
