TWO more names will be added to the list of Indian companies that have acquired production units abroad - WS Industries and El Forge. Both, incidentally, are Chennai-based companies. WS Industries, a manufacturer of insulators for electrical applications, is doing something similar. The company has bought a part of the Georegia unit of Lapp Insulators of the USA, for a free. For free? Well, not quite. The deal is a part of a relationship between WS Industries and Lapp. The relationship has other elements such as sale of WS products to Lapp and Lapp technology for WS. The Lapp plant is now on the high seas, and will be installed, at Chennai, within a month. "If we were to put up a similar plant at Chennai, it would cost us about Rs. 50m.," Mr. Murali Venkataraman, Managing Director, WS Industries, told pressmen, at Chennai, on December 13, 2003. For a company that is in the thoes of a turnoaround, Rs. 50m. is a lot of money.
