Effects of urbanization on bird diversity: A case study in Yizhou, Guangxi Province, China

In urban environment its habitat fragmentation and disturbance of human being intensely, which cause avian diversity decline and urban adapter's number increased. Bird diversity was surveyed to determine the occurrence and composition in Yizhou City, Guangxi Province, China by line transact and point counts methods in four habitat types: parkland, residential areas, riversides and business/industrial areas. There were 112 species which belonged to 72 genera and 39 families. We reviewed 17 studies from Guangxi Province and quantified the number of species studied and their response to urbanization (i.e. Nanning, Guilin & Liuzhou), nature reserve (i.e. Jiaqiaoling, Mulun, Bangliang, Maoershan, Jinzhongshan, Shiwandashan, Nonggang, Damingshan, Huaping, Jinchahua, Yuanbaoshan, Weizhoudao, Shankouhongshulin & Beilunhekou). Results of this study demonstrated that (a) nature reserve can accommodate maximum species diversity (166.14 +/- 66.92, independent t-test, p=0.003) and (b) DF (Family index), DG (Genus index) and DG-F (Family-Genus index) had statistically significance between city-nature reserve (p=0.001, p=0.001, p=0.003, p=0.001, respectively). These results indicated that there were more bird species present in nature reserve. The relationship between bird diversity coefficient of similarity and the distance to Yizhou was drafted by Origin 75, the line negative coefficient can be obtained from the map (Y=0.7378-0.0006x, R-2=0.317, df=17, p=0.015). Based on our results, a mosaic of variegated and fragmented landscapes can reduce species richness; conversely, habitat heterogeneity and less interference tend to attract more bird species. Thus, these results have important implications for avian conservation and land use planning for urban development.
