US coal output maintains gains over 2012

US coal production rose by 5.5pc on the year in the week through 21 December, sustaining a recent uptick in output from 2012, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates released today. Nationwide production totaled 19.5mn short tons (17.7mn t) in the latest reported week, up from 18.5mn st a year ago and 3.1pc higher than last week's estimate.
