American Coal Must Pay 16 Million Dollars For Layoffs

In a surprising legal decision, a state court judge in southern Illinois has ordered the American Coal Co. to pay 16 million dollars in damages to 14 miners who were laid off from their jobs at the company's Galatia mine four years ago.Saline Circuit Judge Bruce Stewart ruled the company wrongfully terminated the men in June of 1998 for exercising their rights under the Illinois Workers' Compensation Act and the Family Medical Leave Act. The ruling came May 24, at the conclusion of a trial in Stewart's court on the matter.
