BNSF coal dust plans inch forward

BNSF met with surfactant suppliers today to review its testing of spraying coal cars to control for coal dust in the Powder River Basin, but a timeframe to start spraying and cost-sharing arrangement with utilities, if one is established, have still not been worked out. BNSF has stated a goal of having all PRB shipments chemically coated by Jan. 1, 2008, to reduce coal dust spillage onto the tracks, but the railroad is now holding off on setting a timeframe as negotiations with suppliers and utilities continue. Coal dust contributed to the disastrous twin derailments in May 2005 in the PRB.
