Arch posts strong Q2, lifts 2008 outlook

Arch Coal's profit grew three-fold in the second quarter, with higher coal prices, better margins and strong results from its trading arm offsetting weather-related challenges in the Powder River Basin. Net income grew to 113.0 million dollars, or 78 cents/share, compared with 37.6 million dollars, or 26 cents/share, in the 2007 quarter, while revenues grew 31.1pc on the year to reach 785.1 million dollars. Results beat the mean analyst estimate as compiled by Thompson/First- Call for 64 cents/share.
