Cardiac catheterization in adults with congenital heart diseases

Improvements in interventional catheterization and surgical therapy of congenital heart disease have dramatically improved the survival of children. Sudden death and chronic heart failure remain the major causes of death, often related to residual lesions. Given the technological evolution of the procedure and the creativity of operators, these lesions are increasingly becoming treatable by interventional catheterization. Alternatively, some congenital heart diseases are diagnosed late and require interventional or surgical treatment during adulthood. Catheterization of adult congenital heart disease came to light as a new field of interventional cardiology, this review aims to describe current indications for cardiac catheterization in adults, taking into account recently published data, emphasizes the features of the procedure, and suggests future possibilities.
