With a crippled economy and a top crop that is more famous as a recreational drug than a sought-after import, Afghanistan doesn't have much to celebrate. Two decades of war have left the country's infrastructure devastated, thousands of people are maimed by landmines, women die needlessly in childbirth, many girls are still denied access to education and the average life expectancy is around 43.
