The automorphism group of a compact generalized quadrangle has finite dimension

Introduction. If one studies compact generalized quadrangles via their automorphism groups, one wants to employ the rich structure theory of locally compact groups. This theory becomes particularly striking if one knows that the groups in question have finite dimension, see [6], In the present paper, we establish this fact for the automorphism groups of compact generalized quadrangles of finite dimension.
