At a recent meeting of the New York State Arborists association, I was asked to speak about threats posed to arborists by arthropod-borne diseases. I was happy to oblige—me having had Lyme disease twice, and knowing several family members and friendswho have contracted an illness from a tick. Now, I think it just as important that I share some of this information with you, too.While mosquitoes that carry viruses like Zika, West Nile, and chikungunya grab national attention, ticks pose a far greater health risk for individuals who workand play outdoors. Like insects, ticks belong to the arthropod clan characterized by having an exoskeleton and jointed appendages.
