A study was undertaken to assess the diversity among newly developed downy mildew-resistant A1 cytoplasmic male sterile lines (CMS) and restorers in terms of their performance per se in hybrid combination for a range of agronomic traits in pearl millet. The results of range of mean, genotypic variance for yield and yield attributing characters indicated the presence of sufficient genetic diversity among CMS lines and restorers. Sixteen hybrids exhibited significantly positive economic heterosis for grain yield per plant and also for other yield components. From this study, it is apparent that there is sufficient variability present among newly developed restorers and CMS lines to produce a range of genetically diverse hybrids with high grain yield.
