Reining in methane emissions is becoming a growing priority for the US gas sector eager to demonstrate environmental bona fides. But while that helps publicly counter intractable green opposition to fossil fuels by narrowing a company's carbon footprint,it also bolsters the bottom line-and not just by capturing more product for market. Methane reduction is also a rising priority in environmental,social and corporate governance(ESG)investing,which is increasingly guiding investment strategy by major funds. It's becoming more obvious to energy sector officials that mitigating methane leaks is a growing metric in calculating environmental performance standards,and something for which investors and shareholders alike are clamoring,according to one speaker at last week's CERAWeek by IHS Markit virtual conference.
