A field trial was conducted during the rabi season of 1997-98 in Hardwar, Uttar Pradesh, India, to determine the effects of N levels (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha) and plant densities (333x103, 222x103 and 166x103 plants/ha) on the production performance of mustard (B. juncea). The number of pods per plant, pod length, number of grains per pod and weight of 1000 grains were significantly increased with the decrease in plant density and increased with the increased N levels up to 120 kg N/ha. Grain yield, stover yield and biological yield were increased significantly with increasing N levels up to 120 kg N/ha, while the same results were obtained with the decreasing plant density up to 166x103 plants/ha. Harvest index and grain productivity were significantly higher at 222x103 plants/ha and 120 kg N/ha. Higher grain yield/ha could be obtained with 166x103 plants/ha and 120 kg N/ha in mustard.
